Technology Infrastructure

This article is part of a wiki booklet called ICT Guide for Decision Makers, a guide for non-technical decision makers of NGOs in Africa, to help them make better informed decisions about ICT strategies for their organisations.
This chapter introduces the basic components of computer technology infrastructure for an organisation. This is not a technical or a training document, all it provides is a brief overview of technology infrastructure related to office work for decision makers.
Introduction
Looking at technology from a manager's or office worker's perspective is different than a technologist's. We work on our computers, read/write documents, make calculations, communicate... we may connect our co-workers via computers, go on the internet, search, read, connect, communicate... sometimes we work with laptops, cell-phones, remotely...
Within the context we set above, we can classify technology levels in relation to an office worker as follows, because this way we can relate to technology better. And if we can relate to it, we can understand:
- Personal Technology Infrastructure
- Organisational Technology Infrastructure
- Internet and Remote Connections
- Mobile and Remote Technologies
We will review each one of these in the following articles.
