Introduction

Foundation for Redemption of the Youth (FOREYO) is a not-for-profit Non-Governmental Organization which is registered as a charity organization in Ghana. Some of the major challenges of youth in Ghana are:

  • Unemployment,
  • Academic challenges such school dropouts,
  • Social and health challenges and etc.

FOREYO was established in 2004 to help overcome these challenges, after the initial work following the conception of the idea in 2003.

Mission

Holistically approach and help solve some of the numerous challenges of Ghanaian youth.

Objectives

  • Promoting education of information technology in schools and within the society Vocational training for youth in information technology (computer hardware and software training) to improve their employability
  • Vocational training geared at self employment, such as dressmaking, tailoring catering and draughtsmanship
  • Youth health education with major emphasis on HIV/AIDS, STDs and malaria, targeting the schools by organizing health forums and use of audio-visuals, such as film shows and etc.
  • Morality and general discipline education in schools and in the society by using advocacy materials such as tracks, leaflets badges and key holders

Activities

Currently the organization has embarked on a project of supplying free refurbished computers to many first and second circle schools in Ashanti Region of Ghana to help them effectively deliver ICT education. ICT is a compulsory subject at schools in Ghana today, but unfortunately 95% percent of these schools have no access to computers.

Of the five percent of the schools which claim to have computers most have very old PCs that cannot be effectively utilised to provide the necessary curricular activities. Some of those PCs are even way outdated Pentium I or Pentium II based computers.

The organization has registered with Computer Aid International, a UK not-for-profit organization responsible for supplying developing countries with quality refurbished computers. An order of 20ft container by the organisation, with 225 PCs for a start is to be distributed to some of the schools. The organization is appealing to other organizations for grants to be able to successfully carry out this project.
